OVERVIEW
The brief was to transform and modernise an old 70's brick ‘box’ which offered a large footprint, but little in the way of functional circulation, natural light and climatic responsiveness.
With the budget in mind the proposed design firstly responds by minimising the extent of additional floor area and rather utilising and reconfiguring the existing footprint to meet the brief and create a better use of space. The dominant focus of the proposal aims to capture more sunlight and improve the vertical circulation and amenity within the house. These two items have been addressed simultaneously by creating a double height stair/ entry void to the north which aims to capture natural light and direct light into the core of the building. Coupled with this openings have been increased, translucent screens added to diffuse and control direct sunlight (and provide privacy) and pitched/ double height external spaces included.
With the original building being heavy and chunky in its appearance, the design addresses this by using these existing 'bones' to ground/anchor the building with new slender/ lightweight elements floating/cantilevering above. In essence the the existing building is serving its structural purpose, recessing into shadow while the new hero elements of the building are expressed above. The proposed materials reflect that of the local region and of the beach context - lightweight, robust cladding coupled with warm timber elements and light/white surfaces to brighten the existing dark interior.
